Secondary Survey
Secondary survey involves:
A trauma specific history - use the AMPLE mnemonic to recall the components of focused history
A detailed head-to-toe examination for injuries
Log roll child from side-to-side to examine the back for injuries and deformities when caring for patients with potential spinal injuries
Laboratory studies include HCT, electrolytes, renal function (e.g., creatinine), coagulation studies and request for type and crossmatch, if clinically relevant
Radiographic evaluation of cervical spine, chest, pelvis in most cases; ultrasound / CT studies if clinically indicated
