- Talk "to the child" rather than talking "over the child"
- Include the child in the discussion of his / her care
- Present information on the child's level, give examples
- Listen to questions and ask the child to repeat the information given, to help prevent misconceptions
- Autonomy and independence of adolescents should be respected by giving them an opportunity to ask questions in the absence of parents / guardians
