Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS)

• Used to assess and monitor the progress of head injury
• Simple, reliable, reproducible, minimizes differences in assessment by different observers
• Eye opening, best verbal response and best motor response are given numerical scores
• Add the verbal, eye and motor scores for overall GCS
• Verbal scale is modified for preverbal children
• Minimum GCS = 3, Maximum GCS = 15; GCS < 8 is considered coma
