Anatomy relevant to blunt abdominal trauma

Anatomy relevant to blunt abdominal trauma:

  • Abdominal wall is thin and less muscular than an adult
  • Rib cage is pliable and provides less protection
  • The liver and spleen protrude lower in the abdomen
  • Trauma to solid organs (liver, spleen) much more common than damage to hollow viscus (stomach, intestines)
  • Liver and spleen bleeding are common source of internal blood loss
