Hypothermia occurs frequently after pediatric trauma:
- Small children have a larger 'body-surface-area-to-mass ratio' - hence, they lose heat faster than adults
- Exposure at the injury scene and during transport exacerbates the degree of heat loss
- Cold water immersion and cutaneous burns are clinical settings of particularly risk for hypothermia
