Anatomic Risk Factors in Children

  • Small body size
    • multiple injuries from a single impact
    • small blood volume → hypovolemic shock can result from relatively small blood loss
  • Large surface area
    • hypothermia develops rapidly
  • Cartilaginous skeleton
    • visceral / brain injuries common in the absence of bony injuries
