Initial Assessment

Initial assessment of pediatric trauma victims includes:

  • Airway: Promptly establish a patent airway
  • Breathing: Ensure effective ventilation and oxygenation, while immobilizing the cervical spine
  • Circulation: Establish effective circulation, vascular access and control obvious external hemorrhage
  • Disability: Evaluate neurologic response, and maintain spinal immobilization
  • Exposure and Environment: Prevent hypothermia
  • Ensure appropriate monitoring and adequate analgesia
