- Approximately 50,000 children acquire permanent disabilities each year, most of which are the result of head injuries
- Head injuries account for 50% of all injury-related deaths in children
- In children < 2 years, physical abuse is the most common cause of serious head injury
- Falls, motor vehicle crashes, pedestrian injuries and bicycle injuries are commonly responsible for head injuries in older children
- Children > 3 years of age have a better outcome than adults after suffering head injury of similar magnitude
- Children < 2 years of age often have a dismal outcome following head injury
