Anatomy relevant to blunt abdominal trauma:
- Abdominal wall is thin and less muscular than an adult
- Rib cage is pliable and provides less protection
- The liver and spleen protrude lower in the abdomen
- Trauma to solid organs (liver, spleen) much more common than damage to hollow viscus (stomach, intestines)
- Liver and spleen bleeding are common source of internal blood loss
