Positioning Tips to Reduce ICP

  • In-line neck stabilization for endotracheal intubation
  • Slight head elevation (30 degrees) on spinal board if not hypotensive, to prevent venous congestion in the head
  • Neck in neutral position
  • Do not occlude venous drainage
    - check fit of hard cervical collar
    - avoid Trendelenberg (head down) position
  • For insertion of central lines, femoral access may be preferable to internal jugular access in order to avoid potential damage to carotid artery
